The MoU between the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the US Department of Agriculture will help Indonesia achieve net zero emissions for the forestry sector.

On 23 January, Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar and Randy Moore, the Forest Service Chief at the US Department of Agriculture, inked an MoU on cooperation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Indonesian forestry sector.

During the signing ceremony in Jakarta, Siti framed the agreement as a milestone that shows America’s support for Indonesia’s implementation of the Forestry and Other Land Uses Net Sink 2030 plan. Known as FOLU and launched by President Jokowi at COP26 in Glasgow, the plan aims for forest management to contribute zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the decade.

Under the Jokowi administration, Indonesia has made substantial progress in forest conservation, reducing the deforestation rate by 65% in the last seven years. This a big deal for the nation that was most rapidly destroying its forests less than a decade ago.

FOLU aims to help Indonesia not only prevent deforestation but also conserve existing forests; defend and restore peatlands; and increase the level of carbon absorption. It will also help the country meet its climate goals under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Siti said he hopes that long-term cooperation with the US would further strengthen several ongoing measures related to forest management, such as boosting Indonesia’s technical capabilities for dealing with forest and land fires or strengthening law enforcement by helping establish a forest police academy.

For his part, Moore highlighted that Indonesia plays a vital role in the global fight against climate change.
